[the nocturnal sun]
July 3rd at Omotesando FAB

Bands: S, Dear Loving, Nookicky, GRAND ZERO, Vogus Image

FAB is one of the snazziest little live houses. From the outside it looks like an expensive boutique shop. All clean and brightly lit. That's just the lobby, though. Go down a few hundred flights of stairs, and it's still nice and clean. There's a bar, with giant soundproof doors leading to the audience area. Downstairs is lockers and some merch tables that don't fit in the bar area. Inside, it's like Rock May Kan without the seats. Same long shaped room, high ceiling, high stage, no curtain, gigantic speakers. Nice place.

Fan report: Lots of REALLY short girls. And some really fat ones. Wide variety of fashion, good number of "normal" dressers (not surprising for the band line up). Also, a surprising amount of older women.

I didn't have time to reserve or buy a ticket, in fact I was in a pretty bad mood and was debating even going here, but I really wanted to see S again. The ticket price was ridiculously expensive, and even more so on the day. And it was one of those ticket-calling days, so I had to wait around alone for a long time outside until they let the people with no tickets (which was me and one other S fan, we bonded mentally) in. Which was a very very long depressing time. I had even come early. Unfortunately for me, S and Dear Loving were first, so I had no chance of getting near the front coming in last. Once I got in, I ditched my bags and got up as far as possible, which was relatively close but still not in the action. About 6 rows back. Some deafeningly loud metal blasted through the speakers and the lights went down, and S made their way on stage. Reina came out first, and cartwheeled across stage as everyone screamed with glee. The others had less exciting entrances. They were all wearing the same suits and hairstyles as last time, the main difference was that this time there were a LOT more fans. And they weren't nice like the Nagoya fans. Only the first row of girls were doing anything, which was mostly headbanging and fist-thrusting. I was so close to pushing all the bitches out of the way and get in the front. Why stand up front if you're not going to participate? It was fun though, I did all the cheesy dances that Dai had us do. He would jump up in the air, do a few punches, and then we'd all do some simultaneous arm movement. They played Kirisuto, Ichinensei, and a bunch of other songs I didn't know very well. Six in total. A good solid set. Yuna threw a pick at me, but it sailed past my head and someone else got it. :(

Next was Dear Loving, who I had been bitter towards since their last CD release, which was weiner music. But I am still a fan of theirs, and therefore inched my way up a few more rows. They took an awfully long time setting up; mostly dragging out huge microphones to put around the drumset. Masa peeked out for a second, made a face at the crowd, and disappeared again. They had some special recorded track that introduced each member as they came out, with a goofy sportscaster sounding voice. Before the guy had a chance to finish talking, they blasted right into Pojipokku. It is SUCH a happy silly fun song, and we all did the pointing and name squealing when the song called for it. Ah, they're so cute. Masa had straight hair again, and was wearing a black tshirt and tight jeans. Kuro had a Super Lover's black and white striped prison jumpsuit, and his hair is in a shaved mohawk and dyed red. Takuya was wearing a smiley face tshirt with khaki overalls. Yuki was rocking a mullet, with a tshirt and button-down over it.

Right after Pojipokku, they played Hello, which just made my day. I forgot that their new music annoyed the hell out of me. The girls in the front were going CRAZY, throwing their arms in the air and whoa, way hyper. Kinda frightening. For the line where he says "I say hello to the dog next door", he changed it to "I say hello to Kuro standing over there", and they made faces at each other. Masa had everyone yell "Hello" four hundred times like in the song. It was so fun. Then they had to go and play the Most Annoying Song In The World, AKA "Anata ni sasageru ai no uta". That song was the main reason for my distaste towards them. It's soooo corny! He just sings "aaaanata ga suki desssssssssssu!" a million times. I think the main reason I hated the song so much was because I used the CD as an alarm clock for a week or so, and then all day I'd have "aaaanata ga suki dessssss!" stuck in my head. Anyway, the audience wasn't too into the song, maybe I'm not the only one that feels that way.

But they turned it around with playing the bonus track off the new CD, Hirakata Boogie woogie. Masa was shaking his ass and they were all dancing in unison. Then Masa tried to get everyone to sing these few lines. No one knew them, so he was teaching us. He kept saying them over and over, and then using these hilarious accents that got more and more ridiculous, and he finally was laughing so hard he couldn't sing anymore. Yuki was being a ham too, imitating an old man, and making all these faces. Then they started changing lyrics... The main lyrics they were repeating were "minna ga hirakata boogie woogie", and then he'd change it to something like "Harajuku is really close to here"... It was just really goofy and fun. After doing the stand-up routine for a while, they went back into the song, which was more butt-shaking and silly dances. Not very many girls were doing the dances, pretty much only the front row again. And I was stuck behind the only tall girl in the entire place. I was doing my best to keep up with the dances, but at one point just stopped out of frustration. Then Masa peered around the tall girl and smiled and motioned to me to keep dancing. Aww. They finished off with Koi was futari de, the first one. The girls changed the hand dances that went along with it. I am a geek for knowing that. But ah, they were really great, even if it was the shortest set ever.

I left the stage front, got a drink, and decided to see what Nookicky was like. I was under the impression they were cute or something, but oh my gawd were they ever the most disturbing band I have ever seen. Full had a Kuropie hat on, swathed in black robes and smeared in black makeup. Which was cool actually. The bassist looked like a little old lady, in a neon pink dress and massive dreadlocked pigtails which were tangled in flowers. Her face was enveloped in two massive rings of black around his eyes. The guitarist was so strikingly normal it was weird. Then the "drummer"... It was of questionable gender but I assume it's a guy. There wasn't a drumset up, just a bunch of cymbals. He stood where it should have been, erotic dancing and fondling the other members, while he wore a VINYL THONG and holographic silver top. His drumsticks were holstered in the thong. I just cannot get over the thong. And the stripper dancing. And the feeling up of other members. Jeeeeeeezus. Their music was dripping with goth goth and more goth. It was dark and spooooky and slightly industrial. Although I was morbidly fascinated with the thong boy and thought the music was good, I ran away to the basement and filled out enquette because I just wasn't feeling it that night. Especially after the drink girl had to be an ass and pretend she didn't understand when I said "COLA" and made me repeat it 400 times, making me feel like an idiot.

Though I was vaguely interested in seeing Vogus Image, I didn't want to hang around another few hours because I was really fuxxing tired, the fans that night were exceptionally rude and obnoxious, and I didn't want to hurry to get my train. So after turning in enquette and buying Dear Loving merch, I left. Not the best night, but I had a few minutes of fun. Don't go to lives alone, especially if you're not in the best mood to begin with.
